Real estate property taxes are based upon the value of the home you own or are buying.   The tax assessor estimates the value of the home based upon other home sales in your community.  As a property owner, you have the right to challenge the tax assessor once a year.  Check with your municipality for the date. You must  fill out a grievance form and show proof as to why you feel you are paying more than your fair share of property taxes.   

Every homeowner who occupies their property is entitled to the Basic STAR program savings.  In addition, veterans, senior citizens and the aged may benefit from additional property tax savings.
